Spelman's New Center for Innovation & the Arts Opens Its Doors and Minds

The ribbon’s been cut and the lights are on. Spelman College’s Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation & the Arts is now open.

The building is a beacon, and not just of light (though it glows like a lantern at night). It is a marker of community, creativity and connection on campus that welcomes everybody.

Designed by Studio Gang and packed with spaces that encourage serendipitous and spontaneous creation. Theater, tech, music, movement, making. All woven into a five-story, 82,500-square-foot hub. Could a more creative and collaborative future for all be starting on the campus of this women’s HBCU? Follow the light.

We’re proud to have played a part. On time, on budget, and as specified too. As lighting consultants, our role was to tune the atmosphere. To help the building flex between critique and celebration, spotlight and shadow, study and surprise. It’s not every day you get to work on a space that’s designed to evolve with its students, but this one does.

Congrats to Spelman, to Studio Gang, and to every partner who brought their best to the table.
