Refreshing Home Lighting

Refreshing the lighting in your home is the easiest way to update your space. Here are some things to keep in mind as you take on this task.

One way to refresh your lighting is to change the color and/or the brightness of your lamps, AKA lightbulbs.  If you are going to change the lamps in your fixtures, make sure to buy enough to change them all using the same make and model number of LED lamps.  Constancy in the lamp will create a consistent mood in your home. Our team leans toward 2700K (Warm White) for our homes and 3500K for our offices. We prefer Philips lamps for overall quality of light and dimmability.

Adding dimmers is another easy way to freshen up the look. You can add a single dimmer for a pendant at your dining room table, or dimmers throughout your space and use a system.  When buying dimmers, make sure you buy a dimmer compatible with the lighting you have. Some dimmers will tell you, others you may just need to test it. If you want to add the dimmers yourself, Youtube is a great resource for instructions. If you are at all concerned with your safety, hire a professional.

Changing a sconce or pendant in your space is another great way to refresh the look. I recommend adding a personal touch with new fixtures. Think about new trims for your downlight if they have faded. We have seen some white trims that have yellowed over time. Refreshing it with a new white one, or black cone white flange. It’s a great debate whether a trim on a white ceiling should have a black cone or a white cone. The white cone camp recommends white, so it blends in.  That camp is concerned that you just interrupted my white ceiling with a black thing. The black camp believes white is too bright when the lights are on because it becomes the brightest thing in the room drawing your eye to the white cone. They know that black becomes a dark void when the lights are off, but when they are on it does not attract the eye.   It is a matter of personal preference. The choice is yours. Test it out on your own to see which you prefer.

With some simple lighting changes, you can revitalize your space.  Have fun trying out new options.
